The Great Lakes Bay Region truly has so much to offer, and my wife, Rhonda and I love exploring and enjoying all it has to offer! If you're new to our area ... here are the TOP 12 most interesting places to check out - perfect for the whole family. We'd love to hear your thoughts and would love to personally welcome you to our beautiful city!

1. Saginaw Valley Rail Trail

The Saginaw Valley Rail Trail links to the 100 mile Great Lakes Bay Region trail system and is one of Saginaw Counties gems, stretching 11 miles from St. Charles to Saginaw. It incorporates a number of natural features including: seven bridges over various rivers and creeks, The Shiawassee State Game Area and many wetland areas. The Rail Trail also offers an equestrian trail, trail shelters, restroom facilities at the Van Wormer parking lot, viewing platforms and benches.

2. Harvey Randall Wickes Recreation Area (aka Satopa Park)

A local favorite, Harvey Randall Wickes Recreation Area is situated nearby to The Sawmill Golf Club, and offers a peaceful and serene walking experience around a pond

3. Zehnder’s Splash Village and Water Park (In Frankenmuth)

All ages make a year-round splash at Zehnder’s Splash Village & Waterpark in Frankenmuth. The 50,000 square-foot aquatic venue offers thrilling water attractions and private cabanas for relaxing.
Frankenmuth’s Bavarian Inn offers an authentic German atmosphere and experience, which includes the world-famous glockenspiel, Fischer Platz outdoor entertainment area and the only known covered wooden bridge with dormers.

4. Saginaw Children’s Zoo

The family-oriented Saginaw Children’s Zoo is home to 150 mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates (not counting the insects) year round! While visiting the Zoo you may run into a few feathered friends walking the beautiful gardens and walkways. Peacocks and peahens roam our Zoo grounds, as do the ducks around the large pond, and our chickens. Our aviary also features birds in free flight. The Zoo also features a neat replica 1900s hand-carfed carousel and the Iberschoff Special mini train.

5. Saginaw County Castle Museum

Castle Museum/Historical Society of Saginaw County, housed in an 1898 former post office turned landmark building, brings history alive. The museum celebrates Saginaw’s diverse and rich heritage through permanent, temporary and digital exhibits. It also houses the Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame.

6. County Parks (550 Acres in Combined Size)

Six county parks spanning 550 acres deliver a gamut of outdoor experiences. Saginaw County offers links to the 100-mile Great Lakes Bay Regional Trail System for exploring both city and countryside. Walkers, runners and bikers share the non-motorized Saginaw Valley Rail Trail, which includes a parallel equestrian trail, the 6.2-mile BayZil Trail Trail and the non-motorized 2-mile Zilwaukee Pathway.

7. Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge

The 10,000 acre Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1953 for use as an inviolate sanctuary and for any other management purposes of migratory birds. The refuge also serves as an ideal destination for recreation. As a designated Important Bird Area, it is a place of global significance for migratory waterfowl. It provides opportunity to witness the migration of thousands of waterfowl and to explore wetlands and a Lakeland prairie.

8. Saginaw Spirit Hockey (at Dow Event Center)

Dow Event Center is home ice for Saginaw Spirit, an Ontario Hockey League Major Junior division playing more than 30 home games each season. Downtown’s Hunington Event Park outdoor venue hosts happenings ranging from mainstage concerts to festivals, foodie events and movie nights. 

9. Saginaw Bay

Saginaw Bay lies within Lake Huron along Michigan's sunrise side. The freshwater bay spans 1,143 acres providing 240 miles of shoreline.This vast body of water facilitates a diversity of recreational activities supported by its coastal communities - Saginaw Bay is a boating destination. Dozens of marinas serve boaters in communities along its shores with services supporting quality boating experiences. Yacht clubs based along the bay offer sail training and racing, including Bay City Yacht Club and Saginaw Bay Community Sailing Association.

10. Saginaw Township Soccer Association

 Open spaces, forests, fields and waters invite experiences ranging from hiking, biking and paddling to disc golf, fishing and more. Athletes kick up good times at Saginaw Township Soccer Association’s 22-field Soccer Complex, a premier tournament site.

11. Temple Theater (Movies, Events, Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra)

The Temple Theatre opened in 1927. The 1,750 seat neo-classic theater is one of Saginaw’s most treasured architectural and entertainment assets. The Temple’s stage welcomes legendary performers and contemporary stars of music, dance, comedy and cinema. It’s the artistic home for Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra. Saginaw Bay Youth Orchestra and Saginaw Choral Society.

12. Mid Michigan Children’s Museum

Youngsters will have their minds and imaginations challenged! The museum features over 16,000 square feet of gallery space, and each gallery was developed around school curriculum with input from children’s museum specialists, educators and kids. It’s a year-round venue inspiring Saginaw’s future artists, scientists and engineers and provides abundant opportunities to problem solve, discover and explore all at their own pace and level while fostering curiosity and creativity.
